My wife and I were discussing these ideas just last week. Brown's ideas are intriguing. One value of arts education in our schools is that studying the arts gives studying history, for example, context. Learning history traditionally means memorizing dates and corresponding events--a static undertaking. However, when we study music, we begin to question why Bach wrote all those chorales and masses, or how blues evolved. This gives studying history context and deepens our understanding and appreciation (and, therefore, performance) of music.

Discuss the following in class:

How does Bach relate to the history of Europe according to our host?

American Jazz great John Coltrane said that one teacher made a difference in his life.  Who was this teacher in Rural North Carolina?
