Legato Playing with younger bands

"Hey Pamela, Thank you so much for posting this. It seems like a really great way to teach the chromatic scale to students. Do you think Mr. Demarco would be willing to post the parts for the entire band? Thanks Greg!"

"Hey there, I'm a flutist and band director. First of all, check the flutes for leaks especially in the right hand. Leaking is very common with flutes. The right hand keys when depressed close 1 or 2 other keys so depress 1 at a time and check…"

Legato Playing with younger bands

I'm curious to know what successful techniques others are using to get their bands to play legato. A couple of major concerns I'm having is with clarinets playing with fast air, filling the horns up, as well as low brass playing connected. We're playing chorales every day, however what I've been saying hasn't broken through to them yet. I'm modeling on my instrument, playing recordings etc. Just curious to see what others are saying/doing to get their groups to play legato. Anyone in the…See More

"First of all, they need to listen to the tone of a really good flutist.  If you have recordings or have them go on youtube and find good flute players to listen to.  They need to get in their head the tone that they are going for. …"

Flute Tone

Hello,I'm not sure if there has been a post or discussion about developing flute tone, I tried searching but nothing came up. I recently accepted a position at a high school as the assistant bd and I'm teaching concert band. I have four flute players in my band and I'm working to develop the tone. Right now they're producing a very "airy" tone and of course I would prefer it to be a pure tone. So as a band we're working on long tones and sustained unison pitches. I thought maybe they were using…See More

Gregory,

Welcome to MSBandDirector.com.  World's largest grass-roots network of professional music educators all dealing with issues relating to Middle School Band.  The site is not really a reference site, but more
of a collaborative site.  Please have a look through the forums to see
which ones interest you and then you can follow the discussions by
clicking "follow".   If you can contribute to any of the forums through
uploads, please do so.  Most new members build their resume page up
first with photos, videos, sound files of their concerts and the like.
Remember, once you have colleagues, you will have access to their
uploaded professional materials as they will have access to yours.

If you would like to see how this works, please count the number of educational videos that you have access to and then colleague request me.  After that, there will be a few more options for you.

again welcome,
