Hi Russ,

Wondering if you could perhaps help us here in West Warwick, RI. We have a bit of a dilemma in that the MS Principal essentially dropped a bomb Friday on our music staff (3 teachers) by stating he could not schedule all the band and chorus students because of staffing.  Of course adding staff member is impossible and not going to happen.  Our MS has about 400 chorus members (5-8) and over 400 band members (5-8) including beginning 5th grade band, and ONLY 3 music teachers.  The school has 850 students total.  In addition, What he did was randomly selected and placed kids into band and chorus, thereby "cutting" about 150 kids from the program. Some band kids are sitting in chorus class (or no music class) and vice versa.  Parents are outraged and a facebook thread has reached epic proportions., as well as the phone calls to school comm., admin., etc.

Being forced to do something, the principal's solution was to combine band classes, and chorus classes by grade level, as we do not have caps on chorus or band (though generally anything over 40-50 has to be approved by teacher).  The principal said it was an easy solution LARGE 7th and 8th grade band classes.  I personally think it would be CRAZY to put beginning band members (gr.5) with 6th graders who have been playing for an entire year in a class of about 50+, and it seems to be pedagogically unsound. That being said, Do you know of any websites or articles that state the pedagogical issues of doing such a thing? Or could we be wrong and having 50-60,combined 5th and 6th grade band students a good thing?

Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Russ:

Yeah I'm a little off the beaten track when it comes to my gig here at old Hugh Boyd.  This year I'm teaching 3 Blocks of African drumming, so I have a lot of non-musicians in those classes.  Also for the very first time I'm teaching an On-Line music comp 11 class.  Besides that it's grade 8 band, 9-12 concert and 9-12 Jazz band.  We are a pretty small 8-12 school with 790 students.  We also run two blocks of guitar that I do not teach.  I'll be looking for material that may be of help in writing curriculum for the Music comp course, which is a real experiment.  Thanks for all you are doing to support us.  -garth

Hi Russ.  Thank you for the warm welcome.  I'm really looking forward to the camaraderie and sharing that msbanddirector will bring.

Maybe I will have to opportunity to come watch you play one Saturday that you're in St. Augustine.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Hi Russ. That's an appropriate comment, and just right for the camp--kids go to camp for enrichment and progress, and that fits the piece's theme. These opportunities are such good experiences! I have a sightreading of the piece by the University of Mount Union Wind Ensemble, conducted by Mr. Jonathan Willis, and the Finale file mp3 playback file. I'll email you both separately. Thanks, Russ.

On the MS BAND DIRECTOR home page, the column of links on the right side of the screen, 3rd item down shows YOUNG BAND SCORE ANALYSIS with a link to REPERTOIRE PROJECT. This link does not work. I am the creator of that website. It used to be hosted at Univ of Texas - San Antonio but as I no longer work there, they have taken down the site. The new, working link is found at I would appreciate the link being updated as I feel there is much information available/usable on the site. Thanks! Brian Harris

National/State Coordination of Guest artists for Middle School Band Programs!

Posted on October 19, 2008 at 2:30pm 5 Comments

This blog will probably end up as a forum, however let's start by discussing the basic notion of bringing in a guest artist to perform (not conduct or clinic, that's different and it's already in the forums) with your middle school band. In the past, guest artists with middle school bands could be cost prohibitive because of transportation, now through this forum we should be able to coordinate a bit.

Let's say I wanted to have a guest artist who lived in Georgia, come… Continue
