I have established several student positions this year. The outcome of these positions thus far has proved to be perfect for the middle school age child. I use a different band secretary every day (those interested serve on a rotating basis - they…

Choral Readings Focus Upon Rehearsal Objectives

Each choral reading begins this way: “In Rehearsal Today and Throughout This Week..."     If you want your students to use critical thinking about specific objectives during rehearsal, try introducing the objectives through choral readings. A few years ago I wrote choral readings for my band students, but it was not until this year that my schedule has allowed me to use them consistently. The students thoroughly enjoy this approach in each grade level: 6th, 7th, and  8th grade band.Procedure…See More

Hi Pamela, I replied this morning to your last letter. Since I see no evidence of it on the site I have no idea of where it went. I could re constrct most of what I said, but I thought it might be better to see if you did receive it before repeating…

Hi Pamela, My solution to the problem you face each year was very similar. I used a basic text and along with it a set of technique builders for the band students. This was supplementary material yet at the same time it covered basic pitches, some…

Students Beginning Secondary Instruments: Sheet Music Provided

Hello All, For the past couple of years I've been involved in beginning our sixth graders on their secondary instruments. (We do this in January.) The instruments we add to our band ensemble are as follows: oboe, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, horn, treble & bass baritone, and tuba. Each year I've wanted to prepare special study sheets focusing upon the notes the students need to learn in order to play their secondary instruments in our concerts. Since I just purchased a NanoKeyboard,…See More

Keyboard controller - Finale - Windows 7 (Suggestions appreciated!)

Previously, I used Prodikey with Finale and had success with it but when I got Windows 7 the Prodikey would not work. I want to get a keyboard controller to use with Windows 7.  I want something small like the Prodikey but I'm not sure what I need. What kind of keyboard controller would you suggest? I've considered the Nano keyboard. If I use this product, do I need all three in the Nano series? For the most part I want to use it to create single line parts or to create snare drum and bass drum…See More

It looks great! I think I will try it very soon. I have been looking for a good assessment tool on the chromatic scale, and this is great because it breaks it up into small bits, AND teaches them to read sharps and flats. Thanks!
