My 8th grade band played Forest Brook Overture last night and it went very well! They loved the piece. It was challenging but not so much so that they couldn't handle it. It's nice to have literature like that to put in front of younger bands who are still learning but who need a little push. Thanks for your music!
Erik,
Nice to meet you at Midwest. Thanks for the great music. I'll keep you informed of our performances. Wishing you the best for a happy holiday season.
Erik,
This arrangement of Hark is amazing! Can't wait to play it next holiday season. Thanks for uploading this one, it is sure to be a hit with my students.
My middle school jazz bands have been playing your charts for years...very well done. Picked up "Carnaval" this year and the kids/audience love it...easy, (sounds more difficult). Buying "In The Doghouse" soon! Just wanted to say thanks for your tremendous contribution to jazz education...especially middle school literature.
OMEA-09-MoralesClinicOutline.pdfWhile at the OMEA Conference in Eugene, Oregon I presented a clinic for band directors entitled, "Uncommon Concepts for Individual and Ensemble Development". The clinic focuses on three concepts to improve accuracy, intonation and overall musicality. The philosophy is "take care of the big stuff and the little stuff will happen". I've attached the clinic outline in PDF format for those interested.
I just returned from Eugene, Oregon where I conducted the All-State Middle School Honor Band- great bunch of kids (all 130 of them!). Of the five pieces we played, three were my own works. They were "Forest Brook Overture", "December Sky" and "The Impossible Machine". The latter was the kid's favorite. If you haven't heard these pieces please take a listen to them here.
Although "The Impossible Machine" sounds tough it was the easiest of all the pieces to put together. The kids loved the modern sound and textures. The piece is centered around the notion of perpetual motion. The tempo is a blistering one as the piece never relents from beginning to end. My works tend to sound more difficult than they are to play. So trust me when I say I can get 130 kids ready to play this with about an hour and a half of rehearsal. You can view the score at fjhmusic.com .
Hey man, did a listening assignment last week with my younger high school group. We listened to several peices, and they were to give me feedback on what they would like to play for our spring concert. "Four Moons" won HANDS DOWN. They loved it!! Looking forward to working on it.
BTW...if I can put a bug in your ear. Last year I did Brian's "Winged Victory" with my top ensemble and beginners. What a blast. Not only did the parents LOVE it, but my 6th graders were gassed out by the high school kids. The big benifit...after the oboe solo, several 6th graders fell in love with the instrument.
I would love to see more literature like this. It was so motivational for my 6th graders to sit on stage with our very best musicians. Just something to think about...wink wink...nudge nudge...say no more : )
Thanks for your music.
Ed
PS - got "In the Dog House" ordered. Great chart.
