High School Players Guide to Playing the Horn 15 page booklet, free, pdf file. Feel free to make copies and distribute as you wish, just include all pages. I am also working on Middle School Player's Guide to Playing the Horn and Band Director's Guide to the Horn and will upload them when they are ready.
School of Music Update: You all probably have heard about the moisture problem at Voxman last June. First semester last Fall they found places for us (teaching faculty) all over the city. The brass were at Zion Lutheran. It wasn't bad as a quick and dirty solution - big rooms, but no acoustic isolation and everyone heard everyone all the time. It was actually nice being out of reach of email and interruption, but the biggest drawback was not being able to keep anything there (schlep it in every day). This semester we are in trailers - about a dozen of them outside the Theater Building. It's great to have a place to call home (however temporary), and they're quite cozy, actually. I could be content to stay here until the new School of Music is built. The only disadvantages are no hallways (weather; you don't see colleagues much) and the restroom (1) is something of a commute in the (former) Museum of Art, which now has rooms for large ensemble rehearsals, offices, and practice rooms. FEMA says the trailers have to go, however, and they are turning the space where the 3 Campus Theaters used to be in the Old Cap Mall into studios for the instrumental faculty; they should be done by August. The offices will be Wenger units, which are great - completely isolated acoustically, and with in-wall controls for reverb (acoustic environment, from dry to cathedral) and recording. And there we'll be until the new SOM is built. It will be nice being downtown for once. The 2nd floor is all UI; first floor is shops and restaurants (there's a great little Korean restaurant right down below). When and where the new SOM will be is anyone's guess. But we're doing everything we always did, just in a different place.
I just made up a booklet "High School Horn Player's Guide to Playing the Horn" - either print copy or as an emailed pdf file - free to any Iowa band director or UI alumnus. Just let me know. I'm currently working on "Band Director's Guide to the Horn" and "Middle School Horn Player's Guide to Playing the Horn." You might also be interested in our web site: www.uiowa.edu/~somhorn - lots of information about everything to do with the horn (check under Resources>Links).

These are pictures from the 1966 State Department Cultural Exchange tour. The band spent 11 weeks performing in Europe and Russia. The last week was cancelled because of earthquakes in Tashkent. The band held a 40th reunion in Iowa City 2 summers ago with over 75% of the attending.
