I have been having good luck keeping my beginning students in band for their 7th grade year, but have a fairly high attrition rate from 7th to 8th grade. What are some best practices for keeping kids in band for their "senior" year of middle school?

Before the kids choose their classes for 8th grade, show them a Power Point of all the things that they will get to do in 8th grade - i.e. special concerts, trips, privleges, etc. This offers some students the proverbial "carrot" to keep them involved in band. You can also take it a step further and have your HS director(s) direct the band and also talk to the kids about everything they get to do in HS band as freshman!
Great Ideas, Thanks!
