WORKSHOP: JAZZ performance for NON-TRADITIONAL JAZZ INSTRUMENTS!
Members,
Do you play an instrument that was never allowed to play in the school jazz program, but you have been asked to direct your school's jazz program? If so, there will be an amazing opportunity for you to perform in a jazz workshop for non-traditional jazz instruments. We will be having a jazz rhythm section and big band charts scored for ALL instruments (Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets,Bassoons, FH, Baritones, Tubas and mallet instruments... are there any more?) So that everyone who would like to learn jazz phrasing and have the experience of performing with a jazz rhythm section, can do so.
This year in Tampa, bring your non-traditional jazz instrument to the workshop sponsored by Dr. Chris Sharp and myself and you will be given the opportunity to learn some jazz phrasing as well as to experience jazz in the first person, by making it. This workshop is designed to be "feel or groove" oriented, so the reading will be at an easy level so that everyone's focus can be on articulation, feel and style.
This "First of it's kind" workshop, as you might envision, will involve some planning, so please respond here in this discussion if you will be participating so that we can have music prepared for you. Of course, there will be a laptop and master arranger, Dr. Chris Sharp on hand to create a part if need be, but this can be minimized if we have a beginning idea of what the instrument and interest might be. You should be able to get the music from this MSBD group as a PDF so that you can practice it, if you like.
This is also a great opportunity if you know of someone in FBA who plays one of the aforementioned instruments, to invite them from within this group, to this group. The network will automatically place them into this group if invited from this group. Hope some FBA members take advantage of this workshop as the results may assist everyone in teaching swing and bossa styles to their clients.
