Hey everyone! I posted this in the Advocacy section, but I thought this would be an equally good place. I am in a rebuilding situation and I know there are a lot of educators out there going through the same thing. I have started a blog to discuss all the things that work well, don't work well, triumphs and setbacks. The address is: www.rebuildingtheband.blogspot.com .

Feel free to discuss here if a blog like this is worthwhile. I'm always interested to get feedback. Thanks,

Jon

Members,
What Jon is doing here is quite unique. Everyone interested in the subject of rebuilding a band program ought to contribute here in the forums with questions as well as visit his actual blogspot blog. (see the link above, click on the yellow letters)
He is cataloging, via a blog, his weekly rebuilding of a program in Arkansas. This will be valuable to anyone who is going through the same thing with either a new program or the taking over of an existing program. Very cool idea and Jon we wish you the very best in this endeavor.
I too am rebuilding a band program in Arkansas. The last 3 directors absolutley ruined this program. The kids have no motivation. The administration only supports the basketball teams and the kids see it. It is a battle everyday to keep interest. Recently, I have talked with other directors and some of them have told me to get rid of the ones who truely do not want to be there or cause problems, then start fresh. They said the program will grow stronger and faster with positive attitudes than negative ones. I am taking his advice this year and slowly but surely weeding out those who are holding this program down. I am seeing a difference in attitudes. Students are taking me more serious and most have woken up to the possibilities of what may come. I still need to clean house a little more, but it is a work in progress. Keep records of everything!

How are things going (I see that date of your post)?

I think it's important to stay in contact with parents. Keep parents apprised of their kids' progress and outside opportunities (private lessons, camps). Form a support group. Invite administrators to concerts (go out of your way to do so). Work with guidance counselors on scheduling kids for band. And be patient. Rebuilding takes years.
